The title of the review is a nod to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, but it is appropriate for the title of this disc also. Love Devotion Surrender: 3 acts of the will. The question is how do they proceed one from another? Does Love engender Devotion resulting in Surrender, or are other interpretations just as valid? Three travelers of the spiritual pathways: Shri Chinmoy, Mahavishnu, and Devadip. Jazz, McLaughlin, and Santana: 3 elements necessary for this recording to work. The question to be answered concerns just how well this offering works. It appears that Shri Chinmoy helped to bring Mahavishnu to Devadip, and McLaughlin brought Santana to Jazz. However it worked, it may not have been complete or totally mature, but the document they produced is well worth your time and the little amount of money that it will set you back these days. Technically, the disc sounds quite clean.Personally, I have encountered the music recorded here at several different junctures during the last 40+ years. Luckily for me, and this recording, every time I found it, I realize that the music does not sound dated. I feel that each time it enters my consciousness it is brand new, or at least sounds that way to me. Of course, that reaction may have more to do with my evolving level of enlightenment, deepening understanding, and/or advancing aging.
